A little Saturday service! On October 10, Jonathan, Tammis, and Laurie helped set up,and Emily Diaz ,Tustin High School Interact Club served dinner for the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner “A Night in the Neighborhood” at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Tustin. We were glad to lend a hand and put “Service Above Self” into action. Reverend Maria Longley, an Associate Pastor at Aldersgate and a fellow member of our Rotary Club, was the organizer of this occasion.

On Thursday, October 8, our Rotary Club had the pleasure of recognizing two outstanding students through our Student of the Quarter program.

Miguel Guerra, from Hillview High School in the Tustin Unified School District, and Walberto Angulo, from Dolores Huerta High School in the Santa Ana Unified School District, have both made tremendous strides in their education. Their hard work, determination, and commitment to moving forward are truly inspiring.

Our club presented each student with a check and a certificate. They also received recognition certificates from the offices of Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento and Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, presented by Lillian Holler, Senior Field Representative (Petrie-Norris’ office).

Congratulations, Miguel and Walberto! We’re proud to celebrate your accomplishments and wish you continued success.

Our Rotary Club once again took part in Tiller Days, serving beer and wine in the Service Club booth from Friday, October 2, through Sunday, October 4.

A big thank-you to Jonathan, Laurie, Maurita, (TUSD), Monique (TUSD), Richard, Tammis, Kristin, Antonio and his wife Jamie, Erin, Leo, Roger and his wife Karen, Sue (Vranich), Clarence, Naomi, her cousin Shamkong, and friend Gerald, and Johnny and his wife Cindy.

You gave up part of your weekend—and braved temperatures over 100 degrees—to SERVE. You served our community in the booth and lived out Rotary’s Service Above Self. We’re so grateful for every one of you!

On Monday, September 28, Laurie represented our club at the Court of Honor awards program for our sponsored Boy Scout Troop 1518, held at Pioneer Middle School.

Congratulations to Nathan Lim and Ethan Pham on earning the rank of Eagle Scout! We also congratulate Micah Chuang on earning Star rank, Elijah Gindi on earning First Class rank, and Crew Luther and Casey Widmayer
on earning Scout Rank.

The evening also recognized the many scouts who earned merit badges.

Yesterday, our Rotary Club welcomed Kevin Sheek of Southern California Edison for a fascinating presentation on the decommissioning of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
Kevin shared photos and explained the complex process of safely dismantling the facility, removing and transporting materials, and securely storing the spent nuclear fuel. Major decommissioning work is expected to continue through 2028, including the removal of San Onofre’s familiar domes.

Thank you, Kevin, for an interesting and informative look at the past, present and future of this Southern California landmark!

September is Hunger Action Month, and this morning, a team of Rotarians—Clarence, Maria, Erin, Jonathan, and Laurie—put service into action by volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank.

We bagged cucumbers and prepared them for distribution, and together, all of the volunteers packed an incredible 6,000 pounds!

Second Harvest is a wonderful nonprofit to support, and we look forward to continuing our involvement and finding even more ways to help further its important work in our community.
