Hicks, Ian

Introducing District 5320’s Governor

Ian’s Rotary journey began when invited to join the Oakland Rotary Club, NJ in 1987. A business opportunity led to joining Allergan in Southern California where Ian joined the Rotary Club of Mission Viejo, where he became a Paul Harris Fellow. Owing to business developments, he joined the Rotary Club of Yorba Linda Sunrise in 1992 and rapidly became involved in International Service projects. Working closely with several clubs in District 5320 and the Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn in South Africa, a successful matching grant enabled the renovation of a Clinic and Community Center in Bollantlokwe, South Africa.

Subsequent developments led to drilling of a water well and also a diesel generator to provide electric power for the Clinic and Community Center. As International Service Chair, additional matching grants were approved for projects, including a portable echocardioscope to support the lung and heart transplant program at the Vilnius Heart Surgery Center, Vilnius, Lithuania.

Ian was President 1996-1997. He became a member of the Paul Harris Society and he and Janet are now Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation. Ian was also awarded Yorba Linda Sunrise’s “Rotarian of the Year” award. He is very active both at the club and District level, having chaired multiple major events, culminating in XO to PDG Lorman and Rotarian of the Year.

Ian’s management background is varied. He served in his commando unit as a member of the intelligence team. He has spent more than 40 years in the Biopharmaceutical Industry, mostly focused in the field of oncology. He has multiple product commercialization successes on a global basis, and eventually served as a member of the Board / Operating committee of Mattson Jack Consulting as well as head of the client services team for the U.S.

Ian and Janet enjoy international travel and experiences, with many photographic safari’s in southern Africa, International Rotary Conferences in Barcelona, Singapore and locally (Los Angeles). They are active gardeners, photographers and hikers, enjoy supporting Rotary events and have a superb time cooking and enjoying good wines with friends.
